Creating Understanding
Found out today one of our families is currently homeless and in great despair. Much like other issues discussed in this blog, the the fact that I am in a place where knowing someone who is homeless is a fact forces me to unpack this reality as part of my own personal consciousness. No longer a reality detached from my own personal world, knowing I interact with someone who is homeless forces a lever of authentic learning that speaks to the way we become communicatively competent. I find myself struggling to comprehend the very idea of being homeless, trying to understand how it can happen, and feeling quite powerless to actually change this reality. I also find myself struggling with anger thinking there are people with multiple homes and more wealth than one could ever need, but simply not exposed to the kind of reality that forces them to think deeply about how they could have a little more balance in their life. Until they are exposed to the depth of inequality in a profound and personal way, they will continue to protect more than they ever need while not knowing what just a little bit of their wealth could do for those in true need.
